Runway review: Paris Menswear Spring/Summer 2014

This is the last of the Spring/Summer 2014 Menswear reviews that I made! You can see the London and New York here and for Milan is here. I want to be honest, writing this review and pick outfits that I like were super difficult! But I enjoying this so much :) And Milan Menswear Fashion week is my favorite this year. And after I reviewed a lot of collections, I think the trends still around flower power, 60's style, tropical prints and marine, but those are quite nice though. And this Paris Menswear also Interesting, more colors just like a painting! check this out!!

3.1 Philip Lim
Accidental Tourist is the theme of 3.1 Philip Lim collection. starting with Plaid prints pieces with the combination of leather jackets or trousers, then Bold Stripes with strong colored stripes and trouser (the blue stripe pants really catch my eyes), then the mysterious Hawaiian floral prints coming to the runway, for me, this floral prints look very beautiful and really great for men (it's only two colors, red n dark blue) not too girly. I really like the tropical essences in this collection, artistic and masculine!

Alexis Mabile
Alexis Mabile made his collection with this statement, He only design what he wants to wear. So, he makes the normal suiting and sportswear looks (not with overly detailed or super eccentric cutting technique) and he can mix it well like tho hooded suit above, he mixes the dandy tailoring with casual look that made from pliant rafia. Mabile makes his denim become unique with adding piping along the back of the pockets and stitched AM sign too. And their button down shirts have a big bow on the neck but it just illusion to make us not realizing that they don't have neck wears. I like this collection because it looks casual but neat, and the colors just so decent.

This show is Standing at the Airport show. Looks like in the Hollywood glamour years while people dress up neatly to go to the Airport. With "passengers"  dress up with suits, shirts, pullover or kind-of-army-themed clothing, businessmen and tourist wearing shirts with tropical colors/motifs. Mattiusi also showing their new products here, now they produce sneakers and sunglasses. I like this collection because it is dandy, really classy and the tropical prints aren't too girly. I really love those three outfits above, n see how well red works on men!

The nautical colors, with marine stripes and motifs are with Balmain in this season. But the style more like the worker of the ship not the passengers. With overall, jumpsuit or cadet-like pieces. But the outwear here are really amusing, all the jackets and casual suits are so French Style. I just can't ask for more :) but I'm not really into their slip on Ballerina shoes..  found it not really manly :)

Alessandro Sartori made this brand become gorgeous! It is one of the most sophisticated menswear in these entire Paris menswear fashion week. It surprised the luxury market about how casual they look but still well tailored. With the inspiration came from French workers uniform from twentieth century, with intensely toned cotton and two tone shoes. But Sartorini also give a little Italian vintage style in some of the pieces, with five buttoned waistcoat. I think you should see all the entire collection, they are totally amazing. Très bien!!

It might be sounds weird, but I think the theme is electric tribal. The abstract motifs on the pieces which looks like broken studio (look at the boom box, speaker, and tuned buttons patterns here and there) or the bold colors that arranged perfectly symmetrical, leggings in sporty shorts and sweatshirts or parka on top (with really creative motifs too) you can see this is a unique collections and not really wearable. The inspiration came from Latin America and Africa. How the African boys layers they outfit and have very mix colors on their clothes. But some pieces looks like LA motifs. At least all of them really colorful and unique.

Hermes being humble in this collection. With country clubs prints and sandaled legs, boatneck t-shirts, and formal evening wear without any shirts in it. Usually Hermes use animal skin for their products, animal fur to make cotton, but now they use a real cotton n linen. The motifs are nice too with boat theme and the colors looks like marine colors. This collection is really casual, summery, light and tourist dress up style. Very nice to wear.

Jean Paul Gaultier
Gaultier's collection always has something really unique. Some of the outfits look really wearable but some just aren't, for examples the very visible fishnet t-shirt, with colored knitted stripes under it, or the pullover that makes you can see the chest of the owner, even high-knee skorts, chaps and sashes. The tailoring seems unique too, with inside tailoring appeared on the outside. And the motifs are flowers, geometric foulard and distressed tiles. But the flower is too colorful for men , i think because it is fauvist. I think for wearing Gaultier's collection, we need men who able to mix and match outfits really well (and normal).

John Galliano
Another unique collection that I chose, this collection looks really young and loose (what?). The models here wear loose tunics, loose jackets, loose shirts, and all loose tops, with layered clothes in them (example: long coats with built-in layers and vents that unzipped). But the youth looks are really obvious, like abstract motifs jacket, until the thick soles shoes. It's not a collection that i adore, because it doesn't look gentlemanly or classy. And the loose polos aren't nice for men, hopefully they will make it wearable in their stores.

Junya Watanabe
This collection looks like vintage time school boy (i do know, Junya won't make it a school boy themed show) or a holiday, with wool jackets and tropical shirts. Featuring Seil Marschall as their bag supporter, Junya making inside-out patchwork of construction as his signature. The first outfits that came out just at the same color, brownish and more dark, and after the red jacket (the bright one) come out, everything just pop and the colors seems more tropical. And the nice tropical motifs on shirt, and pieces which looks so cheerful in baby blue and white. This Collection is very interesting for me. Comfortable, wearable and beautiful to look at!

This collection is Americanized by the designers who are Californian. A lot of the motifs now are kind of abstract waves, because they want to show surfing (even though it's on the sweatshirts), because surfing is what people want to do in California (the designers said it, not me). That's why now the pants are wider, T-shirts worn ragged and unhemmed. It is casual and sporty, with great motifs like always, and honestly i fall in love with their jackets, shirts and sweaters which has strong motifs. Very creative and beautiful, but manly and modern.

Louis Vuitton
One of my favorite collection too. LV this season have the luxurious traveling theme or actually a super preppy, classy and dressy traveling outfits. For motifs and prints, they use dark tie-dye (dark blue, dark red, black), the coat elbow patches made from crocodile skin, the suits from silk, and the denim jackets actually were suede. The styling is pretty modest, with businessman style and casual preppy sports look.Very classy and amazing to wear.
McQ Alexander McQueen
McQ is so youth artful with this pieces. Showing us hot bright colors, bold graphic motifs, and some of the styling looks like indie band style (example: green plaid pants with maroon shirt and bright yellow jacket), but some are normal and very masculine, (just black and white with bold graphic, just like those photos above), and some have a very rock rebellion looks with jeans, and leathers also tartans. i like the first outfits above, full of graphic but not cheesy. McQ's team really did a great job to make punk indie rock style clothes.

Opening Ceremony
This spring collection looks very sporty with shorts, sweaters, cargos, tees, sneakers and slup on shoes. Some outwears look really cool too, like the knee length n super wide hoodies, and full motifs sweats which looks very cool. But for sure the motifs are so artistic, graphic bold colors and youthful. Impressive!

Paul & Joe
Cruise ship theme! (again!) I really like Paul and Joe collection, showing us tropical holiday outfits, with bright colors, marine and tropical land motifs (anchor, fishes, tropical flowers, lions),short sleeves shirts also look really good, and stripes sweats indeed very good. Bags, sneakers, and sandals also supporting these styles. This collection combine the marine trips and jungle lands. Very colorful, neat and masculine.

Paul Smith
There will be no formal tailoring suits tonight said Paul Smith. And yeah the first outfits that come were really colorful and casual, after that we can see some colorful casual blazers. We can see color blocks and hot neon colors everywhere here. And some styling looks so classy like pastel colored sweats with white pants, some look shocking, like hot neon pink knee length trench coat with black shorts. And there is not much motifs here, just a giant colorful fungi, some colorful stripes, and a little bit flowers on some outfits. But the cheerfulness of the colors makes me think about a different world, a candy-high world...

Saint Lauren
I don't really can write about this collection. The clothing and all the style looks like from around late 70's or 80's (im not really sure) with super tight pencil trousers, super pointy shoes, and tight shirts the collection is coming. Stripes everywhere, biker jackets everywhere. The style is quite dandy and fun. Especially the zebra and plastic look super tight pants. What i like from this collection are the tops, and outwears, they look very comfortable and masculine. But just feeling funny for the pants and shoes.

Thom Browne
Not a wearable collection, and kind of super ridiculously creative. The theme was military and as you can see it is a marine army. Showing super long and wide macs, and wide trumpets wide pants, and some cool navy-like jackets. And red lipstics on men. Very creative and not too amusing. I chose this because the uniqueness not because it is kind of a preppy look.

"Couture as Culture" that is this Valentino theme. Couture for ready to wear. honestly i don't really understand the technique that they use for this collection, but i know if the collection try to look casual with jackets, tees, polos but the cut, sewn and everything were so well tailored. The inspiration is uniform, means they make a preppy look. and yes, this collection is super preppy and classic. It is Valentino.

Victor & Rolf
The collections seem like preppy school boy look. With dark colored pullover, suites and jackets. All of the pieces seem not casual at all. With well tailoring suits, combining suiting fabric and strech jersey for the suits, sewing silk into lapels. The casualty isn't on the look, but more in the materials. I like this collection, never wrong being classy.

Which one is your favorite??
Mine is Valentino, LV, and  Paul&Joe
Love you!

Cooking Wishlist : July-August 2013

It's been a LONG TIME since I really want to bake something. I always bake my "The Best" Chocolate Chip recipe that I have the link here. and my Fudgy brownie (which is secret recipe) just that and the last time i bake something instead of those things are Banana Bread and Apple Pie for the fourth of July, just that.

But now I am rather free again (actually super busy) and I need treat for my self! And I decided I want to make some desert! and the recipes are here!

Red Velvet Cupcake by Gonna Want Seconds

  • Cake:
  • 2 1/4 Cups - All Purpose Flour
  • 1 1/2 Teaspoon - Baking Soda
  • Pinch - Salt
  • 1 Cup - Buttermilk
  • 1 Tablespoon- White Vinegar
  • 1 Teaspoon - Vanilla Extract
  • 2 - Eggs
  • 2 Tablespoons - Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
  • 1-1 Ounces Bottle - Red Food Coloring
  • 12 Tablespoons - Unsalted butter - room temperature
  • 1 1/2 Cups - Sugar
  • Frosting:
  • 16 Tablespoons - Unsalted Butter, room temperature
  • 4 Cups - Powdered sugar
  • 16 Ounces - Cream Cheese, room temperature, cubed
  • 1 1/2 Teaspoons - Vanilla Extract
  • Pinch - Salt

  1.  Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour 2-9 inch cake pans or line cupcake pans with liners.
  1.  In a medium bowl mix flour, baking soda and salt.
  1.  In another bowl add buttermilk, vinegar, vanilla and eggs and whisk to combine.
  1.  Sift cocoa into a small bowl the mix with food coloring until it forms a paste.
  1. Beat butter and sugar together, in a standing mixer, set on medium, for 2 minutes.  Scrape down bowl.
  2. Add 1/3 of flour mixture and and beat on medium speed just until it's incorporated.  Add 1/2 the buttermilk mixture and beat on low until combined.  Scrape down the bowl.  Add 1/3 of flour mixture and beat on medium until incorporate.  Add the rest of buttermilk mixture beat on low until combine.  Add last 1/3 of flour mixture and beat on medium until just combined.  Scrape down the bowl.
  1. Add the cocoa paste mixture and beat on medium until incorporated. Scrape down the bowl and make sure the bottom of the batter is incorporating as well.   Give the batter a final good stir with a rubber spatula to mix completely and pour into prepared pans.
  1.  Bake cake/cupcakes in preheated oven about 25 minutes for cake and 20 minutes for cupcakes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.  Cool cakes in pans 10 minutes, then turn out onto wire rack to cool completely, at least 30 minutes.

FOR THE FROSTING:  In a standing mixer, beat butter and sugar on medium until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes.  Add cream cheese, 1 piece at a time, and beat until incorporate. ( Are you kidding me? Yah, I just plopped all the softened cream cheese in-full blocks-not cut up in and had no problems ;0 )  Beat in vanilla and salt. ( don't skip the salt- it doesn't make the frosting taste salty it heightens all the other flavs. IMHO).  Spread or pipe on completely cooled cakes.  If frosting seems a bit too soft to pipe well, pop it in the fridge a few minutes to firm it up a little.
Tips : If you don't have buttermilk, just mix 1/2 cup evaporated milk + 1/2 cup of low fat milk and add 1 tbsp white vinegar in every 1 cup of the "buttermilk"

Classic Carrot Cake by Green Cilantro

Adapted from Flour by Joanne Chang
Makes one 8-inch, 2-layer cake
Or 12 cupcakes
For the carrot cake:
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup (220 grams) packed light brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup (150 grams) canola oil
  • 3 tablespoons nonfat buttermilk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons (160 grams) unbleached all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 2 cups (260 grams) tightly packed shredded carrots
  • 1/2 cup (80 grams) raisins
  • 1/2 cup (50 grams) walnuts, toasted and chopped
For the cream cheese frosting:
  • 12 ounces (340 grams) cream cheese, left at room temperature for 4 hours
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick/114 grams) unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 1 2/3 cups (230 grams) confectioners' sugar
For the carrot cake:
1. Position a rack in the center of the oven, and heat the oven to 350 degrees. Butter and flour an 8-inch cake pan (or line a standard 12-cup muffin tin with paper liners).
2. Using a stand mixer fitted with the whip attachment (or a handheld mixer), beat together the eggs and brown sugar on medium-high speed for 3–4 minutes, or until the mixture is light and thick. (This step will take 8–10 minutes if using a handheld mixer.) In a small bowl or pitcher, whisk together the oil, buttermilk, and vanilla. On low speed, slowly pour the oil mixture into the egg-sugar mixture. This should take about 30 seconds.
3. In a small bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and ginger. Using a rubber spatula, fold the flour mixture into the egg-sugar mixture. When most of the flour mixture has been incorporated, add the carrots, raisins, and walnuts and continue to fold until the batter is homogenous. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan (or divide evenly among the prepared muffin cups).
4. Bake the cake flour for about 1 hour and 20 minutes (or the cupcakes for about 50 minutes), or until the top is golden brown and springs back when pressed in the middle with a fingertip. Let cool completley in the pan on a wire rack.
For the cream cheese frosting:
5. While the cake is baking, put the cream cheese in the stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, and beat on medium speed for about 1 minute, or until smooth. If you have forgotten to take the cream cheese out of the refrigerator 4 hours in advance, you can softren it in a microwave on medium power for 30 seconds. Add the butter and continue to beat for another 1 minute. Scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl and add the confectioners' sugar. Beat for 1 more minute, or until well mixed. You should have about 3 1/2 cups.
6. Cover the frosting and refrigerate for 2–3 hours before using to allow it firm up enough to pipe and spread. (The frosting can be made up to 5 days in advance and stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator.)
7. Remove the cake from the pan and split it into two layers. Place the bottom layer, cut-side up, on a cake plate. Spoon about half of the frosting onto the layer and, using an offset spatula, spread it evenly to the edges. Place the top layer, cut-side down, on top and press down to adhere. Spoon on about 1 cup of the frosting and spread it over the top and down the sides of the cake. This is the crumb coat which will keep any loose crumbs from migrating to the surface of the finished cake. Spoon the remaining frosting on top of the cake, and spread it evenly across the top and down the sides.
(If you have baked cupcakes, remove them from the muffin tin. Fit a pastry bag with a 1/2-inch star tip and fill the bag with the frosting, then pipe the frosting onto the cupcakes. Or, spread the frosting on the cupcakes with an icing spatula.
8. The cake (or cupcakes) can be stored in an air-tight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. It is best served a littel cooler than room temperature, so remove it from the refrigerator about 2 hours before serving.

Definitely I can't wait to bake them!!!!!!
p.s I promise my friend to bake her my well-know (haha) brownies, and my dad and I now bake our own white bread, because we are Bread lovers for breakfast!

Do you like to bake? what kind of thing that you like to make??
Love you!

Runway review: Milan Menswear Spring/Summer 2014

This Milan Menswear shows are my favorites, I meant the styles mostly are perfectly classy. And like i said in my New York and London Menswear post here, I just picked the shows that unique and elegant that become my favorite. In Italy i feel more elegance collections than the other city (NYC, London, Paris) and I still a bit confuse which one is my favorite after Roberto Cavalli, is it Giorgio Armani, or some of the others? Check them out!

Andrea Pompilio
Pompilio was a designer who has strange and new style for Milano, but  he became more suited and formal in his collections. And in this season show, he still have those suits style BUT with his original touch which is motifs. His theme is Vegas (weather in Vegas) which creates confusion motifs. I chose this collection is because it is unique but classy too, the jacket in the first really drive me crazy!

Motorcycle is the theme of this season. With new fabrications like canvas, denim and nylon to drive down the price. Mertin Cooper said even though Belstaff still consider as a new brand but he drew his designs still long time ago, and add some view stuffs here and there to make it modern not a vintage ones. For me this collection is really great for men's outwear all the jackets, pullover, coats and etc are very genius and amazing, all of them are so masculine.

Bottega Veneta
This collection isn't really good but also isn't bad. with Jazzy Old American Theme they doing well with it. I like the sweaters and other outfits are better than the suits, because something not really good with the size or measurement of the pockets, but maybe it is just a new style. but I really like the first and third outfit, looks really neat and classic like someone from old time Jazz era.

A brand new suit maker shows the world that it has another style. With more lighter and more simple. This collection theme is Paris. The designer, Elisabetta Canali said if this collection is between dream and reality. With rather darker color for opening, and then pop the cheerful color and more artistic than the dark-lawyer-like suites. With colored jackets and suites, with fun motifs like polkadot, stripes and mermaid.

Diesel Black Gold
It is still full of denim and leather like the usual DNA designs. And because this collection is for summer, so for trousers and jeans they made it looser. And for jackets are some kind of Bomber jacket and Motorcycle jacket. I like the outwear collections here because of the motorcycle jackets and denim. But the leather shirts look interesting too.

This collection's theme is Sicily and Greece, of course this duo designers want to make Sicily as their motifs for their collection (and some other past collections) because they came from Sicily. And they want to make it as the presentation of Zeus and Apollo. The tailoring including slim suits in shantung silk and raffia, and for jackets, shirts, and some other suits they have matchy pattern with the trouser's pattern. Not all of this collection have Sicily motifs, some just have basic colors or stripes. But I like the look from the first and second suits above, with motifs or not? still look amazing.

I feel something in this collection... Mexican style. There are some Mexican details on the trousers, also western style for the shirts and jackets, horse patterns and leather added in a lot of things. Some of the style feel so Western, but some like the usual Etro, but these new detailing methods  make it different. I love (one of my favorite) this collection because the colors are rich and beautiful but still not too much, also the motifs are beautiful not girly like some other floral design outfits for men. Suits, shirts and jackets are really beautiful and unique.

Silvia Fendi said that she is more confident with this Menswear collection, and she's not using sly twist to this collection too. And we can see this collection is full color and a lot of color blocks clothes with brave colors. She wanted to make this collection looks like on vacation and casual, even in the most formal outfit still have some casual touch, like print which look like swirling sandstorm. And most of the suits there make me fall in love, because it's classy but very casual.

Giorgio Armani
Navy Blue is the main color for Giorgio Armani this season, and in the middle some other colors that pop and came out. Looks like the aesthetic of the collection appear slowly. In here we can see Armani combine casual and sportswear with something more dressy. Also we see minimal graphic pattern in this collection. This show is one of my favorites too. from suits, outwears until shirts all of those are really amazing. the leather jacket in the first outfits looks very masculine combining with the soft pink jeans. In here all looks simple and clean.

This season seems younger, happier more casual, and flower-y (if you know what I mean). a lot of T-shirts here more than shirts, casual pants, and color suites. And don't forget with citron and floral patterns every where.I like the idea for putting floral patterns on sweatshirts and and shirts, I just don't really know if there is someone out there want to wear floral full-suits for their daily look. But the luxury feels come with those floral patterns, Gothic and enchanting.

Iceberg in this collection looks younger and casual because of the changing main designer from Paolo Gerani to Curradi who is 37 years old. The collection adding sportswear sense with technical and sartorial fabrics. With slip on moccasin, graphic shirts or sweaters, casual pants and skinny are all over here. I like the modernness of this runway collection. Youth and chic.

John Varvatos
This suit-maker designer is fantastic. John Varvatos knows how to dress his client up elegantly. His jackets are three buttoned, and elongated.Pants that he creates were bootcut or narrow. I like how he makes those suites looks so classy and neat, also those jackets which have waistcoat, also those leather pea coat or three button coat that look very smart and classic. I like men's styles who want to dress up like this.

Marc Jacobs
I feel the sun in this collection i meant, summer sun. tropical colored suits, shirts, pants, floral pattern, and chevron patterns every where. This collection feels like vintage time. and seeing these suits are made for workwear, I chose the dark colored suits, I don't think I really enjoy seeing someone wearing pink suits in the office except while it was a fashion company or on holiday. And here (like above) the suits looks very elegant, the geometrical patterned sweatshirts are really preppy. Very Amusing.

Missoni Technic to produce their clothing is different. They use knitting looms not knitting machine, it makes them able to make unique fabrics, like they new type of wear the waterproof coat (they coat the fabric with rubber). And the color theme is darker and look like African theme colored with earth toned, green forest colored and blue-indigo. There are stripe bamboo patterns on everywhere, and tribal knitted look for the clothes. Very urban and unique!

Moncler Gamme Bleu
This one is unique, and not really wearable. and the theme is cricket! The designer also made this collection with pure white color and just a little touch of three color stripes. the mix of the textures that made are unique, and the designer adding this statement if he made the with classic fabrics which are already Bleu's signature. This collection isn't easy to wear, but still beautiful enough to enjoyed in a runway.

I am not really satisfied with this collection honestly. The color block suits that really bold isn't my style. But i like the more formal suits here. And the patterned shirts look lovely too. But this collection is quite nice for holiday in tropical summer places..

Philipp Plein
The style in Plein is dressy but with a touch of rebellion (or casualty). Phillip Plein shows us suits tailoring collections, sweatshirts, leather jackets, shirts and..... under wear (panties). I like this collection because it is kind of dressy but still casual, and the casualty isn't too over until looks scary. and both suits and jackets are fantastic!! For sure I don't have any comments for the panties with "Bad Boy" words on butt's part.

Ports 1961
I adoring this collection, the cut and tailoring are clean and chic, with cropped trouser or shorts as the bottom part (i don't like the short, it's too short for city wear). Mostly in this collection the outfit doesn't have any pattern, but in some other clothes they give some masculine geometric pattern. These suits looks really neat, and those outwears are incredibly smooth, classic and looked very smart.

Roberto Cavalli
My favorite from these entire Milan shows, and I bet you know what is the reason because of the classic and dress up style for sure. And Mr. Cavalli gave his menswear collection for his son Daniele, and I really like his choices for this collection. He thought about gentleman, warrior, honor, pride and fierceness. The color choices are amazingly elegant and great for men, warm colored. He also add some geometrical prints for the silk shirts or abstract blade motifs for the biker jacket or jacquard. My favorite here are especially the suits and tuxedos. But the jacket is very amazing too.  Looks really glamour and elegant at the same time.

Salvatore Ferragamo
In this season you'll find numbering on the outfits, on the shirts, tank tops, outwear and the drawstring too. It's not a sportswear collection, just the inspiration is athletes wear numbers on their jersey, so the designer just want to give number for his menswear. Giornetti also combine the casual look with dressy look. He also played with materials and colors for this season. I like the outwear collection from this show, really casual and the color just pop!

I can't really describe this collection, because some group of outfits here seems so different with the others. A lot of things here are inspired by Donatella's addiction to sportsmen that exercising a lot to get their goals. Like trousers ending in an athletic ribbed cuff and suit sleeves folded up into elbows, also the colorful details that sometimes appear on model's skin and clothes (i don't know what was that meant). But the knit wear and suits are well make and looked so amazing.
